Acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron, known for blockbuster hits such as Titanic and Avatar, has announced his next major project: a film adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s bestselling novel The Devil. This marks Cameron’s first new film collaboration since completing his highly anticipated sequel Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes, scheduled for release later this year.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Cameron revealed that his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, has acquired the film rights to The Devil, a dark fantasy novel published on May 6, 2025. The book made an immediate impact, debuting at number one on the UK Sunday Times bestseller list and securing the fifth spot on The New York Times bestseller list in the United States. Cameron confirmed that he will co-write the screenplay with Abercrombie, combining their creative talents to bring the story to the big screen.
“I can’t wait to dive into this book while finishing Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes,” Cameron wrote. “Bringing these unforgettable characters to life will be a thrilling and rewarding challenge.” He described The Devil as “a twisted, stylish, and subversive medieval romp… a rollercoaster of a story filled with Joe’s trademark sharp wit and dark humor.” Cameron praised Abercrombie’s narrative style as “highly cinematic” and noted that the adaptation “will stand on its own as a unique work within the fantasy genre.”
Joe Abercrombie, a celebrated figure in modern fantasy literature known for his gritty and morally complex storytelling, responded enthusiastically to the announcement. “For over 40 years, James Cameron has amazed audiences—including me—by turning the impossible into reality on screen,” Abercrombie said. “His ability to blend breathtaking action sequences and spectacle with deeply personal and emotional storytelling is unparalleled.”
Cameron further explained that he has been a longtime admirer of Abercrombie’s work but that it was The Devil specifically that inspired this partnership. “The originality and depth of the world and characters in The Devil finally compelled me to pick up the book and reach out to Joe about adapting it,” he said. “I am excited to explore this dark, complex universe and help translate it into a film experience that fans and newcomers alike will appreciate.”
The upcoming project highlights Cameron’s continued interest in ambitious storytelling and innovative filmmaking techniques. After revolutionizing the sci-fi genre with Avatar and its sequels, Cameron’s move into adapting a dark fantasy novel suggests a new creative direction while staying true to his reputation for grand cinematic vision.
Meanwhile, Cameron’s Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes is set for release by Disney on December 19, 2025. The film is highly anticipated as the latest installment in the Avatar franchise, which has been praised for its groundbreaking visual effects and immersive storytelling.
As fans await Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes, excitement is already building for what promises to be another visually spectacular and narratively compelling project with The Devil. With Cameron’s expertise and Abercrombie’s storytelling, this collaboration could redefine the fantasy genre on film.
