Keanu Reeves takes on a new, celestial role in the recently released official trailer for Good Fortune, a comedy written and directed by Aziz Ansari in his feature film debut. Reeves portrays Gabriel, a well-meaning but awkward angel searching for purpose. The trailer offers a glimpse into his journey.
In the film, Gabriel grows weary of mundane duties and yearns for a more significant mission. “Is there a way I can take on a more meaningful assignment?” he asks. Sandra Oh appears as Martha, a fellow angel, who advises, “To save a lost soul, you must first find it.”
Gabriel targets Arji (played by Ansari), a struggling gig worker in Los Angeles, and Jeff (Seth Rogen), a wealthy venture capitalist. When Arji learns he has a “budget guardian angel,” he is both skeptical and intrigued. Gabriel arranges for Arji and Jeff to swap bodies in a cosmic experiment, which quickly spirals into unexpected chaos—especially when Arji becomes reluctant to return to his old life.
Ansari not only directs for the first time in narrative film but also serves as the sole credited writer and producer alongside Anthony Katagas and longtime collaborator Alan Yang. Despite being his directorial debut, Ansari brings experience from directing episodes of Master of None and his 2022 comedy special.
Speaking at CinemaCon last year, Ansari said, “This movie is about struggles many people face but rarely discuss. Writing about those experiences is a step in the right direction.”
Good Fortune will premiere in Australian theaters on October 16 and in the U.S. on October 17.
