Amazon MGM has secured the film rights to Split Fiction, the popular cooperative video game developed by Hazelight Studios, ending a competitive bidding process, Variety reports. The project will be directed by James Zhu, known for The Magic Wicked Witch, and will star Sydney Sweeney.
The screenplay is being written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the duo behind Deadpool and Logan. Sweeney is also attached as an executive producer alongside Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen and Hazelight Studios founders Joseph Fares and COO Oscar Volontis.
Details about the film’s plot, full cast, and the degree of fidelity to the source material remain under wraps. It is not yet confirmed whether Sweeney will portray one of the game’s two playable characters, Zoe or Mio.
Split Fiction, created by Joseph Fares and Sebastian Johnson, centers on two writers trapped within the worlds they have created. The game blends various narrative genres and focuses heavily on cooperative gameplay, featuring split-screen combat, platforming elements, and distinct abilities for each character.
The game has received critical acclaim and commercial success, selling over one million copies within two days of its release, continuing Hazelight Studios’ strong track record. Their 2021 hit It Takes Two is also being adapted into a film by Amazon in collaboration with Seven Bucks Productions.
This will not be Sweeney’s first venture into video game adaptations. The Euphoria star is currently working with director Michael Bay on a live-action film adaptation of Sega’s 1986 arcade classic OutRun.
