Apple TV+ has unveiled the first teaser trailer for its epic historical drama series, “Chief of War,” starring, written, and executive produced by Jason Momoa. The nine-episode series is set against the stunning backdrop of Hawai‘i and follows the story of warrior Ka‘iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he attempts to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century. The show will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes available on Friday, August 1, 2025, followed by weekly releases every Friday through September 19.
Co-created by Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, both of native Hawaiian heritage, “Chief of War” presents the unification and colonization of Hawai‘i from an indigenous perspective. The series features a predominantly Polynesian cast including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, and others.
Produced by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment for Apple TV+, the series has Jason Momoa directing the season finale and serving as an executive producer. Doug Jung acts as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Sibbett, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, and Brian Andrew Mendoza. Justin Chon directs the first two episodes and also executive produces. Additional executive producers include Anders Engström, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten. The musical score is composed by Grammy and Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer, who co-produced the score with James Everingham under the Bleeding Fingers Music collective.
“Chief of War” follows the success of Apple TV+’s hit series “See,” which also stars Momoa and is currently streaming worldwide.
Apple TV+ offers a wide array of original drama and comedy series, feature films, documentaries, and family entertainment.
