Bruce Miller, the creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, explained how the series finale ties directly into The Testaments, the sequel novel by Margaret Atwood. The finale ends with June (played by Elisabeth Moss) recording her story, echoing the pilot episode’s opening and serving as a narrative bookend. Miller revealed that this was intentional from the very beginning, with an audio “Easter egg” placed in the pilot that’s finally fulfilled in the finale.
The story doesn’t end with The Handmaid’s Tale finale — Hulu is producing The Testaments series, set a few years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. Miller is directing and working with much of the original cast, including Moss as a producer. The sequel will focus on the younger generation, especially June’s daughter Hannah, exploring their stories in a new political context.
Miller also discussed bringing back other characters and how they’re adapting the timeline and story for television, which involves some creative changes compared to the books. He emphasized how deeply connected the characters are, describing The Testaments as a natural continuation rather than a separate story.
Regarding the controversial death of Nick at the end of season 4, Miller clarified that Nick was aware of the risks involved and always tried to do what was best for his family. His choice to board the plane despite the dangers was consistent with his character’s arc about being a good man and protecting those he loved, even at great personal cost.
Miller also touched on how June’s grief over Nick’s death will be explored in future stories, highlighting the ongoing emotional consequences for her.
Finally, there was a brief mention of rumors about Taylor Swift making a cameo on the show. Miller neither confirmed nor denied this, keeping fans guessing.
