Netflix is breaking new ground with its first original Korean animated film, Lost in the Stars, whose official trailer was released today. The story follows a star-crossed couple forced to face an impending separation and a long-distance relationship. The film is set to premiere this Friday, May 30.
The trailer reveals that Lost in the Stars is a romantic story infused with beloved K-drama elements. The couple dreams of changing the world in their own ways: Nam-young (voiced by Kim Tae-ri from The Handmaiden) is an astronaut preparing for a rare opportunity to join a Mars expedition, while Jay (voiced by Hong Kyung from Weak Hero) is a struggling artist hoping to share his music with the world. Deeply in love, their relationship is put to the test when Nam-young is suddenly recruited for a space mission to fulfill her lifelong dream.
Can their newfound love survive the challenges of time and distance? This theme lies at the heart of the film. The movie’s stunning animation style is reminiscent of the recent works of Japanese director Makoto Shinkai, such as Your Name and Weathering With You. However, Lost in the Stars is directed by Han Ji-won, known for the film Summer. Han co-wrote the screenplay with Kang Hyun-joo, the director of the acclaimed thriller Red Letter.
Lost in the Stars comes highly recommended by Parasite director Bong Joon-ho, who praised it as a “visual masterpiece that will take you on a journey through the cosmos,” making it one of the must-watch animated films of the year.
Though set in the near future of 2050, K-drama fans will recognize iconic locations like Olympic Park and Cheonggyecheon Stream, which have been artistically altered to fit the film’s futuristic setting. The movie also blends retro-futurism and nostalgic elements, such as turntables and vinyl records, paying homage to Jay Chou’s deep musical influence.
Netflix will officially premiere Lost in the Stars on Friday, May 30. Check out the trailer above and prepare to embark on a romantic journey across space and time.
