by Barbara

The much-anticipated first trailer for the animated feature film Song of the Sea has been released, showcasing a visually stunning story rooted in Irish folklore. This international co-production is a collaboration between Ireland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Belgium, and France. The film is produced by Cartoon Saloon, a renowned animation studio based in Kilkenny, Ireland, with co-founder Tomm Moore at the helm as director.

Song of the Sea draws inspiration from traditional Irish myths, centering on the journey of a young boy named Ben and his sister Saoirse, who is revealed to be the last “selkie” — a mythical seal child. The siblings embark on an epic quest to return to their seaside home, navigating magical realms along the way. The film features voice performances by Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, Pat Shortt, Lisa Hannigan, and David Rawle, known for his role in The Moonlight Boy.

Tomm Moore is not only the director but also the creative director and co-founder of Cartoon Saloon. The studio’s debut feature, The Secret of Kells, brought Moore international acclaim, earning the Irish Film and Television Award (IFTA) for Best Animated Feature and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2010. Moore’s subsequent film, The Prophet, was recently shortlisted at the Cannes Film Festival.

The screenplay for Song of the Sea was co-written by Moore and Irish screenwriter Will Collins, known for My Brothers. The film’s distinctive visual style is led by French art director Adrien Mérigot.

The trailer release marks a significant milestone for this highly anticipated animated feature, which continues to build excitement as it moves toward its international release.
