The first trailer for Hot Milk, a highly anticipated drama set to hit cinemas this summer, has just been released. The film made its debut at this year’s Berlinale in February, and MUBI has acquired the distribution rights, with the UK and Ireland release scheduled for 4 July 2025.
Hot Milk is set against the backdrop of a blistering Spanish summer, where Sofia (played by Emma Mackey, known for Sex Education and Emily) and her ailing mother, Rose (Fiona Shaw of Bad Sisters and Killing Eve), travel to the coastal town of Almería. There, they seek the help of Dr. Gómez (Vincent Perez, Alone in Berlin, Boléro), an enigmatic healer who may hold the key to Rose’s mysterious illness. The strained relationship between mother and daughter is at the heart of the story, and Sofia soon finds herself drawn to Ingrid (played by Vicky Krieps of Phantom Thread and Corsage), a free-spirited woman who embodies the sense of independence Sofia longs for.
As tensions between Sofia and Rose grow in the oppressive heat, Sofia begins questioning her mother’s illness and the secrets that may have been kept from her for years. As revelations and lies unfold, the characters find themselves confronting hidden truths that may be better left unexplored.
The film features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Yann Gael (Gladiator II, 1899) and Patsy Ferran (Mickey 17, Firebrand). Hot Milk is based on Deborah Levy’s novel of the same name, and it promises to be a gripping, emotionally charged drama filled with complex characters and intense relationships.
