Narivetta, the highly anticipated Malayalam-language action drama starring Tovino Thomas and directed by Anuraj Manohar, is set to release worldwide on May 23, 2025. The film’s production company made the announcement via their Instagram page, where they confirmed the release date with the message: “The date is set!! #Narivetta will release on May 23.”
The film, which has sparked considerable excitement, is based on real events. It marks the Malayalam debut of renowned Tamil filmmaker Cheran, who also stars in the movie alongside Thomas and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The film’s latest trailer reveals that all three actors portray police officers, with Cheran playing a senior officer, while Thomas takes on the role of a subordinate officer.
The trailer opens with a scene in which the police attempt to demolish what they claim are illegal huts built by indigenous people in a forest area. Cheran’s character, a senior officer, seeks the cooperation of the locals as the situation turns tense. However, the police use increasingly violent methods to force the people to leave.
One particularly intense moment shows Cheran scolding Thomas’s character, warning him not to “play the hero.” The film seems to explore themes of resistance and revolution, as the conflict quickly evolves into a battle over land ownership. The trailer emphasizes the growing confrontation between the police and the tribal community, who refuse to vacate their land, even at the cost of their lives.
As the story unfolds, viewers will witness a deeper twist as Thomas’s character faces interrogation for a shooting incident involving a rifle. The film’s central theme is succinctly captured in two key phrases from the trailer: “When the system betrays, revolution begins.”
Narivetta is produced by Tippushan and Shiyas Hassan, with the screenplay by Abin Joseph. The film’s cinematography is handled by Vijay, with music composed by Jakes Bejoy, and editing by Shameer Muhammed. Arun Manohar is responsible for costume design, and Bawa takes on the role of art director.
Tovino Thomas shared his thoughts on the film in a recent post, describing Narivetta as a political drama that addresses bold and timely issues. He expressed hope that the film would provide an engaging cinematic experience and stimulate thoughtful reflection long after viewers leave the theater. Reflecting on his journey in the film, Thomas noted that the character arc was emotionally challenging, involving moments of joy, happiness, crisis, and sorrow. He added, “This is a film I’ve always hoped to be part of in my career.”
As the countdown to May 23 continues, the film is expected to spark widespread discussions, both for its political themes and intense performances.
