Warner Bros. released the first official trailer for The Conjuring: The Final Rite on Thursday, revealing the fourth and final installment of the Conjuring series. However, this may not necessarily mark the end of the franchise.
The movie, like its predecessors, is inspired by the real-life cases of paranormal investigators Ed (played by Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (played by Vera Farmiga). This time, the focus is on the Smurl case from 1986, in which a family was tormented by a demon for over a decade.
In the trailer, Ed Warren mentions, “Each case is different, each family is different. Once you start, there’s no turning back. Anything can happen. And most likely, everything will happen.” Lorraine hints that this case may be the most dangerous yet, telling Ed, “This one’s different.” At the end of the trailer, a demon ominously tells Lorraine, “We’ve been patiently waiting for you,” before attacking her.
The film is directed by Michael Chaves, who also directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021. Chaves has also directed other films in the Conjuring universe, such as The Curse of La Llorona and The Nun 2. James Wan, who directed the first two Conjuring films, serves as an executive producer. The screenplay was written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. The cast includes newcomers Mia Tomlinson (The Lost Pirate Kingdom, Beasts Must Die) and Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody, The Voyeurs).
The Conjuring franchise has been a major success at the box office, grossing over $2 billion worldwide. The first film, released in 2013, earned nearly $320 million globally on a modest budget of $20 million.
