‘Eddington’: Phoenix and Pascal Clash in Ari Aster’s New Film

by Barbara

Paramount+ has released the official trailer for Eddington, the latest film from acclaimed director Ari Aster, known for his work on Hereditary, Midsommar, and Disappointment Blvd. This contemporary Western centers on a tense power struggle in the fictional New Mexico town of Eddington, set in May 2020. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the local sheriff, while Pedro Pascal plays the town’s mayor. The film’s ensemble also features Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Dierdre O’Connell, and Michael Ward.

The one-minute trailer cleverly integrates social media elements, underscoring the platform’s significant role in the film’s narrative. A second trailer offers more footage, showcasing early confrontations between Phoenix’s and Pascal’s characters and the escalating turmoil engulfing the town. Notably, Emma Stone portrays Louise Cross, the sheriff’s religious wife, while Austin Butler appears as Vernon Jefferson Pike, a social media influencer impacting Phoenix’s character.

Since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Eddington has sparked considerable controversy but has also received widespread critical acclaim. Critics have hailed it as “extraordinary,” “brilliant,” and “the first truly modern Western,” praising its sharp portrayal of America and gripping storytelling. Others likened the film to “a firework thrown into a gas station,” warning that “the world isn’t ready” for its provocative themes.

Ari Aster’s Most Controversial Film Yet?

Early reviews and the trailers suggest Eddington could be Aster’s most divisive work to date. The film delves into themes of community division, pandemic anxiety, and American identity, clearly designed to provoke strong reactions across the political spectrum. A24’s full support of Aster’s uncompromising vision has been crucial to the film’s creation. However, whether Eddington will resonate with mainstream audiences or if its confrontational tone will limit its box office appeal remains a significant question for both Aster and A24 this year.
