In the cinematic galaxy of Star Wars, few characters are as recognizable—or as enduring—as the golden protocol droid C-3PO. Since the franchise’s inception in 1977, one actor has been consistently behind the character’s polished metal frame: Anthony Daniels. The British performer remains the only actor to have appeared in every theatrically released Star Wars film, a legacy spanning more than four decades.
Daniels first became involved with Star Wars in 1975, two years before the original film’s release. Initially hesitant about the project, he was shown conceptual artwork by artist Ralph McQuarrie. One image—a lonely-looking robot staring into the distance—deeply resonated with him and ultimately convinced him to take on the role. That decision would define the trajectory of his career.
Playing C-3PO has never been a physically easy role. The 19-piece gold-plated costume Daniels wore severely restricted his movement and caused considerable discomfort during long hours on set. Despite these challenges, he brought a sense of fussy charm and neurotic energy to the character, helping to make the droid a beloved figure across generations of fans.
Daniels’ portrayal of C-3PO has extended far beyond the original trilogy. He reprised the role in the prequels, the sequels, and in standalone films such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. While C-3PO did not appear in Solo, Daniels still made a brief cameo in the film as Tak, a human con artist—highlighting his continued involvement in the Star Wars universe.
Outside the big screen, Daniels has also voiced the character in animated series, video games, and theme park attractions, maintaining a consistent presence that has helped preserve the character’s continuity across formats. His voice has become inseparable from C-3PO’s anxious, protocol-obsessed personality.
In 2023, Daniels made a surprise return as C-3PO in the Disney+ live-action series Ahsoka. In the episode, the droid appears to support General Hera Syndulla during a Senate hearing, intervening on behalf of Senator Leia Organa. The appearance marked Daniels’ 12th live-action portrayal of the character and reaffirmed his lasting role in the saga.
Over time, Daniels has developed a personal affinity for C-3PO, a character who began as just a costume and became a cinematic icon. Through persistence, performance, and passion, Anthony Daniels has ensured that C-3PO remains not only a fixture in the Star Wars galaxy but also in the history of film itself.
