An official trailer has been released for The Protector, a gritty action thriller set in a dusty, post-apocalyptic world reminiscent of Mad Max. This film marks the feature directorial debut of Raul Gasteazoro, who spent years developing the project on a low budget, filming on location with a passionate team.
The story revolves around the West’s last freshwater source, hidden beneath a Native American reservation, and contested by evil forces. A convict named Key, played by Marguerite Moreau, holds the only map to the water and becomes an unlikely protector of a young boy who may hold the key to saving the region. As Key uncovers the harsh realities of her world, she fights to secure the West’s future. The cast also includes Graham Greene, Chris Redman, Mark Lane III, and Jade Tailor, supported by numerous extras and stunt performers.
Set against a backdrop of water wars, famine, and drought, the West is lawless and dangerous. A brutal new sport called “Dirt-Joust,” a violent form of drag racing, captivates the desperate population. Key, the only driver to survive a loss, has paid a high price—her freedom and her wife. To escape a manslaughter sentence, she strikes a deal with Gael, leader of the outlaw gang called the Revelers. Her mission is to navigate the booby-trapped reservation and reach the freshwater aquifer, using her unique map. Success means freedom.
Formerly titled The WaterBearer, The Protector is written and directed by Raul Gasteazoro, produced by James Cooney, Matthew Fahey, Jamie Roberts, Casey Unterman, Helix Wolfson, and Gasteazoro himself. Michael Sempert composed the film’s score. The movie has yet to premiere at any festivals but will debut in select US theaters and on VOD starting May 23, 2025.
