Too Many Great Sci-Fi Shows Are Overlooked — Will Murderbot Be Next?

by Barbara

In a time when streaming services like Apple TV+ have taken over the entertainment world, it’s hard to imagine a show like Murderbot even existing. Not only does it star A-list actor Alexander Skarsgård, but it’s also adapted from Martha Wells’ ambitious Murderbot Diaries, a sci-fi series that combines stunning effects and high-quality production, typically seen in blockbuster films, not series on a relatively new streaming platform.

But Murderbot is more than just a sci-fi drama—it represents a larger trend in television. Streaming platforms, especially Apple TV+, have begun creating incredibly high-budget sci-fi and fantasy series that, despite their quality, struggle to reach a wide audience. Murderbot, which premieres on Apple TV+ this Friday, is the latest example. Skarsgård’s character, a robot who secretly becomes independent and capable of free thought, provides the heart of a show that mixes dark comedy with classic science fiction action. The series, with its 10 short episodes, showcases a robot hired to protect a group of “hippie scientists” exploring a mysterious planet.

In a twist, Murderbot doesn’t want to take over the world or harm its human charges—it just wants to watch reruns of its favorite space opera. The show explores social issues, from corporate greed to idealistic social justice, all wrapped in a fun, action-packed adventure.

However, despite its charm and quality, Murderbot might not receive the widespread recognition it deserves. Apple TV+ has a history of investing heavily in sci-fi series that have trouble finding mass appeal. Shows like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Constellation, and Invasion were also lavishly produced but didn’t achieve major popularity. Even shows like Silo and For All Mankind, despite strong storytelling and star power, lack the broad audience engagement of more mainstream titles.

This trend is not unique to Apple TV+. Other platforms like MGM+ and Peacock are also producing high-quality but less mainstream sci-fi shows, such as Beacon 23 and From. While these shows are impressive, they often struggle to garner wide attention.

As a sci-fi fan, I appreciate these ambitious, well-crafted stories, even if they’re not destined to become global phenomenons. I hope Murderbot breaks the trend and garners the attention it deserves. Sci-fi fans shouldn’t be the only ones to enjoy these stories—others should too, especially when they offer something more engaging than many of the franchise-heavy films dominating theaters today.
