Netflix has announced a new military drama series titled Boots, starring Miles Heizer, known for his roles in 13 Reasons Why and Parenthood, alongside Vera Farmiga, acclaimed for her performances in When They See Us and Halston. The eight-episode series is inspired by the memoir The Pink Marine by former U.S. Marine Greg Cope White and is set to debut soon.
Boots is set in 1990 and follows Cameron Cope (Heizer), a gay high school student who faces bullying. In an effort to escape his struggles and find a sense of belonging, Cameron impulsively enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps alongside his best friend Ray (Liam Oh). Ray, a straight young man and son of a strict Marine father, stands by Cameron as they both navigate the challenges of boot camp. The series highlights the harsh reality of being gay in the military during that era, a time when it could result in imprisonment or worse.
The show delves into the physical and emotional trials faced by Cameron and his platoon, illustrating their transformation amid the demanding Marine Corps training. It also explores Cameron’s complicated relationship with his mother Barbara, played by Farmiga. Barbara is portrayed as a complex character whose unstable lifestyle leaves her adrift once Cameron leaves home.
Max Parker co-stars as Sergeant Sullivan, an elite Recon Marine decorated for valor but haunted by his own secrets. Sullivan sees aspects of himself in Cameron and attempts to prepare him for the personal battles ahead beyond boot camp.
The series is created by Andy Parker (Tales of the City, Imposters) and Jennifer Cecil (One Tree Hill, Hostages), with executive production credits including legendary producer Norman Lear, Brent Miller, Rachel Davidson, Scott Hornbacher, Peter Hoar, Sony Pictures Television, and Greg Cope White himself, who contributed to the writers’ room.
Boots promises to offer a compelling narrative that combines intense military drama with powerful themes of identity, friendship, family dynamics, and societal prejudice. Netflix plans to release the series soon, offering viewers an intimate look at a challenging and transformative time in American military history.
