The upcoming film Tatami is set to captivate audiences with its gripping story, centered around an Iranian judo athlete, Leila, and the intense political pressure she faces. The movie, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, will finally make its U.S. debut this summer, hitting select art-house theaters on June 13, 2025.
The story unfolds during the World Judo Championship, where Leila, portrayed by Iranian actress and director Zal Amir Ebrahimi, is forced to make a difficult decision. After her coach, Mariam, receives a last-minute ultimatum from the Iranian government, Leila is told to fake an injury and lose the match to avoid being labeled a traitor. Faced with the potential end of her career and the threat to her family’s safety, Leila is caught between following her coach’s advice and submitting to the oppressive regime or continuing her fight for the gold medal and, perhaps, her freedom.
The movie not only explores the personal and professional struggles of an athlete but also tackles the broader theme of resistance against political oppression. The film is described as a creative statement to the world about the many innocent Iranians who are risking their lives in the battle for freedom. The tension in the plot steadily builds, laying the groundwork for an unforgettable journey of determination and sacrifice.
Directed by Zal Amir Ebrahimi, making her directorial debut, and Guy Nattiv, an Israeli director known for films such as Skin and The Flood, Tatami is the first film to be co-directed by Iranian and Israeli filmmakers. The screenplay, penned by Ebrahimi and Nattiv, delves deep into the high-stakes world of international sports and political intrigue, capturing the harsh realities athletes like Leila must face.
The film is shot in stark black and white using the 4:3 Academy ratio, which enhances its cinematic impact and reflects the serious, tense tone of the story. With a powerful message and unforgettable performances, Tatami promises to be a film worth watching, offering an intimate look into the life of a woman caught between duty, fear, and hope.
Set to be released by XYZ Films, Tatami promises to be an impactful and thought-provoking drama, offering viewers an opportunity to witness the extraordinary courage of one individual in the face of insurmountable pressure.
