Retroware has debuted a brand-new trailer for Toxic Crusaders, offering fans a fresh look at the highly anticipated side-scrolling action game. The reveal took place during the MIX Summer Showcase, according to Bloody Disgusting, and included new details about the game’s expanded content.
However, the trailer came with a disappointing update: the game’s release has been delayed once again and is now expected to arrive later this year. Fans will have to wait a few more months to take control of their favorite radioactive anti-hero.
Based on the cult 1991 animated series of the same name — which itself was a loose adaptation of Troma Entertainment’s cult film franchise The Toxic Avenger — Toxic Crusaders is a retro-inspired 2D beat ’em up. It draws stylistic influence from beloved arcade classics like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The game will feature a diverse lineup of playable characters, including Toxie, Nozone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Toxie’s girlfriend Yvonne, and even his mother, Mrs. Junko. Players will battle through stages inspired not only by the original cartoon but also other Troma films, such as Class of Nuke ‘Em High (1986) and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006).
Players can expect to face off against classic villains like Dr. Killemoff as well as newly created monsters, many of whom serve as boss characters. To manage incoming damage and keep the action fluid, the game introduces a “Tag Out System” that allows players to switch between characters once a meter is filled.
Toxic Crusaders is slated for release on multiple platforms, including Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
The upcoming game ties in with renewed interest in the Toxic Avenger franchise. A reboot of the original film, starring Peter Dinklage and Elijah Wood, is set to premiere later this year. Although the movie was first announced back in 2021 and had a limited debut at the 2023 Fantastic Fest, it faced a lengthy delay. It is now officially scheduled for theatrical release in North America on August 29.
Toxic Crusaders is expected to launch sometime in 2025.
