Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth Returns in 4K This Summer

by Barbara

Kino Lorber has released a new trailer for the 4K restoration of Dogtooth, the 2009 psychological drama directed by acclaimed Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. The restored version is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters beginning June 20, 2025, with a wider rollout planned in additional cities later in the summer.

Dogtooth, which brought Lanthimos international recognition, explores themes of isolation, manipulation, and control. The film follows a father who keeps his three adult children confined within a secluded family estate, subjecting them to a strict and fabricated version of reality. Their exposure to the outside world is tightly regulated, but the fragile balance begins to collapse when the father introduces an outsider—a young woman—into the household.

Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009, the film was awarded the Prix Un Certain Regard and went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011. Its unsettling narrative and stylized direction marked a significant moment in Lanthimos’ career, preceding his later successes with The Lobster, The Favourite, Kinds of Kindness, and Poor Things.

The cast features Christos Stergioglou, Mary Tsoni, Christos Passalis, and Michele Valley. The film has drawn comparisons to the works of directors such as Michael Haneke and Gaspar Noé, noted for its stark tone, unsettling humor, and moments of abrupt violence. It remains widely regarded as one of the most distinctive European films of the 21st century.

The 4K restoration was overseen by Lanthimos and completed using the original 35mm negatives. The process was handled at Asterisk* Post and I Hear Voices studios, with color work by Gregory Arvanitis and Thimios Bakatakis, and sound restoration led by Landros Ntounis. The updated version aims to retain the film’s original texture while enhancing its audiovisual impact for contemporary audiences.

Produced by Boo Productions and mk2 Films, Dogtooth continues to resonate for its provocative critique of authority and family structures. The upcoming re-release offers both new viewers and longtime fans a rare opportunity to revisit the film in theaters in its newly restored form.

A trailer for the 4K edition is available via Kino Lorber’s official YouTube channel.
