The term “stan,” popularized by Eminem’s 2000 hit, has evolved to describe intensely devoted—and sometimes toxic—fans who can engage in harassment, stalking, and doxxing on social media. Eminem’s recent documentary STANS, which premiered at the London SXSW Music Festival, highlights this growing cultural phenomenon.
Now, the psychological thriller The Stalker delves into the darker side of fandom. Written and directed by Alex Russell (Bear, Beef), the film stars Archie Madekwe (Salter, Midsommar Nightmare), Zack Fox (Abbott Elementary), and Matthew Pellerin, with original music by Kenny Beats.
The story follows Oliver (Madekwe), a solitary retail employee who befriends a rising pop star. As Oliver gains fame, his social circle tightens, leaving Matthew (Pellerin) isolated and struggling to prove his worth beyond being a mere hanger-on.
Russell revealed to Variety that he penned the script during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns. Although initially uncertain about directing, he expressed satisfaction with the final film, which draws inspiration from the fame-obsessed culture of cities like Los Angeles.
Russell commented, “The movie highlights the absurdity of competitive relationships between men. While dramatized, it reflects a reality some recognize as authentic, while others find it hard to believe.”
The Stalker is set for release on August 22. The official trailer is now available for viewing.
