New Zealand audiences will get their first look at the film Pike River, with the official trailer set to be released ahead of the movie’s October debut.
The film is based on the 2010 Pike River mine disaster, which tragically claimed the lives of 29 miners.
It tells the true story of Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse, two women who lost loved ones in the tragedy and became central voices in the families’ fight for justice.
The roles of Anna and Sonya are played by two of New Zealand’s most respected actors, Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Malcolm. Lucy Lawless stars as union leader Helen Kelly, while Tim Gordon portrays Bernie Monk, the spokesperson for the Pike River families.
Director Rob Sarkies expressed his excitement about sharing the first trailer after working closely with many Pike River families for five years. He hopes the film will help New Zealanders understand the determination of these families and the challenges they endured.
“Melanie and Robyn brilliantly capture the inspiring friendship between Anna and Sonya, a bond that turned them into community leaders,” Sarkies said.
Filming took place primarily in Greymouth, with additional scenes shot in Wellington and Auckland.
Pike River will have its world premiere as a special screening at the Sydney Film Festival on June 7, followed by its New Zealand premiere in Greymouth on October 30. Several Pike River family members from New Zealand and Australia are expected to attend alongside the cast and crew.
