In the 1970s, Satish Bhaskar was a newlywed with no prior knowledge of sea turtles. However, he took up the challenge of studying turtle nesting along India’s coastline. With only a transistor radio, a pencil, and a notebook, Satish embarked on lengthy boat trips, often spending months at a time gathering data before returning to submit his reports.
His fascination with sea turtles grew so strong that he dedicated years to studying and walking along the beautiful coastlines of India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This remarkable journey of a man’s solitary mission to conserve sea turtles is brought to life in Turtle Walker, featuring stunning cinematography and a rhythmic soundtrack. The film weaves together joyful conversations between the now elderly Satish and his wife, Brenda, highlighting their shared experiences and the deep connection they have with the cause.
Taira Malaney, an Indian documentary filmmaker, directs this moving film. Malaney, known for her award-winning works such as The Call of Pashmina, is also deeply involved in social justice and environmental issues through her films. Her debut feature, Turtle Walker, earned the prestigious Jackson Wild Media Award for the Grand Teton Award.
