Bob the Builder Animated Movie Starring Anthony Ramos in Development

by Barbara

An animated film adaptation of the popular children’s series Bob the Builder is underway, with Anthony Ramos voicing the lead character, Roberto (Bob). The movie, produced by Jennifer Lopez, will offer a Latinx-focused retelling set on a construction site in Puerto Rico.

Bob the Builder first gained popularity with its iconic catchphrase, “Can we fix it? Yes, we can!” The original British series aired from 1999 to 2011 across 18 seasons before a CGI reboot launched in 2015. This new adaptation aims to combine education with entertainment while reimagining the classic story for a contemporary audience.

The film’s animation style has yet to be confirmed, with uncertainty over whether it will feature the modern CGI look from the reboot or return to the character’s original design. This decision could influence audience reception, especially among fans drawn by nostalgia.

The project is part of Mattel’s growing lineup of brand-based films following the massive success of Barbie, which grossed $1.45 billion globally and earned eight Oscar nominations. Unlike Barbie, however, Bob the Builder has been dormant for several years, making its commercial prospects less certain.

Mattel acquired the Bob the Builder franchise from its original British owners in 2011. Recent children’s film adaptations such as Clifford the Big Red Dog (2021) and Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2022) have achieved moderate box office returns but fell short of blockbuster hits. If managed carefully, Bob the Builder could similarly generate profits.
