Blumhouse Productions is developing a feature film based on the popular supernatural horror game Phasmophobia. Known for its multiplayer ghost-hunting gameplay, the game gained widespread attention during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The movie is being produced in collaboration with Atomic Monster and Kinetic Games Limited, the game’s developer. Details on the release date and distribution are yet to be announced.
Phasmophobia, which launched in early access in 2020, quickly became a viral sensation, especially among Twitch streamers and YouTubers. The game topped Steam sales charts for several weeks and has sold over 23 million copies worldwide across multiple platforms. It also earned the Best Debut Award at the 2020 Game Awards.
The announcement was made at Hollywood’s first “Horror Business” event, where Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum and President Abhijay Prakash spoke. This project follows Blumhouse’s successful 2023 adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, which earned $291 million globally despite its simultaneous streaming release on Peacock.
A sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, is set to premiere on December 5. Blumhouse’s gaming division is also developing new titles, including Hellfire Eye and Sleep Tight.
