Sega has officially released a series of new videos showcasing Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut ahead of its upcoming release as a launch title for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console. Among the newly unveiled content is a detailed three-minute trailer that provides an in-depth overview of the game’s setting, narrative, gameplay mechanics, and new features.
Set in the vibrant, neon-lit streets of Tokyo in 1988, Yakuza 0 tells the gripping story of two young gangsters, Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, as they navigate a brutal underworld power struggle. The trailer highlights key elements of the game, including its intense hand-to-hand combat system, diverse mini-games that range from karaoke to arcade challenges, and the introduction of online cooperative missions — a new feature for this edition.
One of the standout additions is the game’s opening animation, which features the song “Bubble” by Shonan no Kaze. This iconic track had been notably absent from previous Western releases of the game, making its inclusion a special treat for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Originally launched in Japan in 2015 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, Yakuza 0 serves as a prequel to Sega’s long-running and beloved Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. The title quickly gained critical acclaim for its compelling story, rich atmosphere, and engaging gameplay. It expanded to North American and European markets in January 2017 on PlayStation 4, followed by releases on PC in 2018 and Xbox One in 2020.
The Director’s Cut edition, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025. This version promises several enhancements over the original, including new cutscenes that deepen the narrative, a brand-new online multiplayer mode allowing players to team up with friends, and fully localized voice acting in English. Additionally, the game will support multiple languages for text, with French, Italian, German, and Spanish among the localization options, ensuring accessibility to a broad international audience.
As one of the flagship titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut aims to bring both nostalgic and fresh experiences to fans of the franchise and newcomers eager to explore the rich underworld of 1980s Japan.
