Pinguim Content, a Brazilian animation studio, has released the official trailer for My Grandfather is Japanese, an animated film that will have an exclusive preview at the Cannes Film Market in 2025. The film is slated for its global premiere at the renowned Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it will be featured in the Annecy Presentation section.

The 2D animated film, which incorporates Japanese cultural elements, follows ten-year-old Noboru, a Japanese descendant who embarks on a journey to understand his cultural identity. Seeking answers, he turns to his grandfather, Hideo, who has long avoided discussing his past. However, Hideo agrees to share his family history, and as Noboru delves deeper, he uncovers the existence of an unknown uncle.

Directed by Celia Catunda and written by Rita Catunda, My Grandfather is Japanese is adapted from the acclaimed novel by Oscar Nakiri. The film explores themes of identity, resilience, and cultural inheritance through the eyes of a family grappling with the challenges of immigration. The vibrant visual style of the film is inspired by the artwork of Brazilian-Japanese contemporary artist Oscar Oiwa. Producers Nakiko Mistrorigo and Ricardo Rizzino, from Pinguim Content, have used their distinctive approach to deliver a visually stunning and emotionally rich narrative that combines Japanese cultural themes with the emotional depth of Brazilian storytelling.
