The highly anticipated second season of “Peacemaker” is officially returning, with John Cena reprising his role as the restricted-rated DC superhero in the first trailer released for the new season. Created by James Gunn, co-president of DC Films, the new season is set within Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, which began with the animated series “Creature Commandos” and continued with the summer hit “Superman.”
The trailer also features guest appearances from Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl, both of whom will reappear in “Superman.”
“Peacemaker” Season 1 premiered in 2022 on Max (formerly HBO Max) as a spin-off from Gunn’s 2021 film “The Suicide Squad.” The show stars Cena as Christopher Smith, a patriotic mercenary first introduced in “The Suicide Squad” and recruited by the mysterious ARGUS organization (Advanced Research Group United Support). In the first season, Smith investigates the Butterfly Project and is tasked with eliminating parasitic aliens controlling human minds worldwide.
The returning cast includes Danielle Brooks as Amanda Waller’s daughter, Freddy Stroma as a hapless vigilante, Steve Agee as ARGUS agent John Economos, Jennifer Holland as ARGUS agent Emilia Harcourt, and Robert Patrick as August “Auggie” Smith, Peacemaker’s racist father, also known as White Dragon. The beloved bird companion, Eagly, will also return. Frank Grillo reprises his role as Rick Flag Sr., who first appeared in the animated “Creature Commandos” and will play a key role this season. This comes after Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. (portrayed by Joel Kinnaman) in “The Suicide Squad,” setting the stage for unresolved tensions between Flag Sr. and the mercenary.
The second season of “Peacemaker” is scheduled to premiere on August 21 on Max, with a total of eight episodes.
