Matt Groening on the Long Delay for The Simpsons Movie 2

by Barbara

At this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, The Simpsons co-creator Matt Groening shed light on why the highly anticipated sequel to the 2007 blockbuster The Simpsons Movie has yet to materialize, nearly two decades after the original’s unprecedented success.

As the longest-running scripted primetime series in U.S. television history, The Simpsons has aired more than 790 episodes and remains a cultural touchstone with a devoted fanbase. Despite this enduring popularity and consistent production, the show’s sole theatrical release remains the 2007 feature film.

Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily at Annecy, Groening candidly discussed the enormous creative and logistical challenges involved in producing a feature-length film while simultaneously continuing the demanding schedule of a weekly television series. When asked about the sequel, he explained: “The first movie drove us crazy. We don’t have a ‘B team’; we were making the show while making the movie… We even had a countdown clock on the wall — what we called the ‘Simpsons Death Clock’ — counting down months, weeks, days, seconds until the film was finished. It was exhausting.”

This relentless dual workload contributed heavily to the prolonged delay in starting production on The Simpsons Movie 2. The team’s inability to delegate or split responsibilities meant that creating new episodes of the series took precedence, pushing the movie sequel further down the priority list.

The original film was met with widespread critical acclaim and, more significantly, remarkable box office success. Produced on a relatively modest budget of $75 million, it grossed an astonishing $536 million worldwide, cementing its place as a milestone achievement for the franchise.

However, despite this commercial triumph, the creative team’s commitment to producing fresh Simpsons episodes has dominated their time and energy. Writing and developing a feature film script adds another layer of complexity and pressure to an already demanding production schedule.

Groening’s remarks make it clear that the decision to delay the sequel is partly a conscious choice to avoid rushing a project that might not meet fans’ expectations or uphold the series’ legacy. Instead, the team prefers to wait until they are fully prepared to craft a sequel that is both meaningful and worthy of the brand’s iconic status.

The enduring popularity of The Simpsons means that viewers continue to enjoy a vast library of classic episodes, providing ample content as they await new cinematic material. The creators’ focus remains on maintaining the show’s quality and originality, even as it approaches nearly four decades on air.

The original film succeeded largely because it retained the sharp wit and style of the television series, while expanding the narrative scope to fit the cinematic format. Writers such as Mike Reiss, John Swartzwelder, Jon Vitti, and George Meyer played pivotal roles in adapting the show’s golden-era tone for the big screen, delivering a story that resonated with longtime fans and newcomers alike.

While the show’s 36th season includes many notable moments, it also underscores the pressures faced by the creative team in balancing ongoing production demands. Groening’s remarks suggest that protecting the well-being and creative integrity of the team remains paramount, rather than rushing to produce a sequel.

Ultimately, any continuation of The Simpsons Movie franchise will depend on when the creators feel ready to invest wholeheartedly in telling a story that lives up to the high standards set by its predecessor. For the millions of fans who remain devoted to the series in 2025, the promise of The Simpsons Movie 2 remains a hopeful but non-urgent prospect.
