Sex Education has set a new viewership record for Netflix’s English-language series. Since its premiere in March, the British drama has amassed 141.2 million views, surpassing Stranger Things Season 4, which garnered 140.7 million views, and securing the position as Netflix’s second-most-watched English-language show of all time.
The top spot remains held by Wednesday Season 1, which achieved 252.1 million views in 91 days. On the non-English series front, Squid Game holds the global record with 265.2 million views for its first season.
Sex Education’s impressive performance has also translated into historic success in the UK, where it became the first Netflix show to top the UK streaming charts. The show’s success was further cemented at the Gotham Television Awards, where it won the Breakthrough Limited Series Award. Lead actors Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper both earned acting awards for their performances.
During his acceptance speech, Graham expressed his gratitude: “We are deeply moved by your warm reception. This is a work full of love, respect, humility, and dignity. We poured our hearts into this theme with great passion and care.”
The series, which revolves around a 13-year-old boy who is arrested for the murder of a classmate, has earned widespread acclaim. It has sparked significant discussions, particularly regarding the dangers of online male spaces and the radicalization of young men. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly praised the series, describing it as “a torch illuminating issues many didn’t know how to address.”
Produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, Sex Education is expected to receive multiple Emmy nominations, with the nomination list set to be announced in July. Although a second season has not been officially confirmed, the production team has hinted that further development is being considered. Graham told Variety, “Maybe, let’s see how the data pans out. But it’s certainly possible we could develop another story.”
