Director Douglas Schulze’s New Film Pays Tribute to Classic Horror
The upcoming horror movie Thorns, directed by Douglas Schulze, draws heavy inspiration from iconic horror films such as The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist. However, it’s clear that the primary influence for Thorns is the Hellraiser franchise. The film even stars Doug Bradley, famously known for his role as Pinhead in Hellraiser.
The movie promises a blend of practical makeup effects and gore, reminiscent of the best horror films of the 1980s. Thorns will be available for streaming on VOD starting May 6, 2025, through Vantage Media.
A Terrifying Plot and Familiar Faces
In Thorns, the story follows an ex-priest working for NASA, who is sent to investigate a remote observatory. The observatory went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, the ex-priest discovers that the signal has opened a portal, unleashing a thorned monster. Now, he must summon his lost faith to prevent the signal from leading to the end of the world.
Schulze reflects on the film’s roots in classic horror, saying, “At its core, Thorns is an homage to 80’s-era monster movies, especially in its use of practical effects and a synth-heavy music score.” He continues, “The best horror films avoid relying on computers for visceral scares, and that’s the essence of Thorns.”
Tony Timpone, known for his work in the horror industry, serves as co-producer for the film.
Why Horror Fans Should Be Excited
Fans of classic horror will appreciate the movie’s dedication to practical effects, with nods to beloved films like Hellraiser, The Thing, and Alien. The film aims to deliver a raw, immersive experience, using minimal CGI to maximize the impact of its monster and gore. With Doug Bradley leading the cast, Thorns is set to be a thrilling addition to the horror genre this spring.
Thorns is an exciting and intense ride for horror enthusiasts looking for a film that mixes nostalgia with fresh terror.
