New Cast Joins Peacock’s “The Office” Universe Mockumentary

by Barbara

Peacock’s upcoming mockumentary series, set in the same universe as “The Office,” has added four new cast members to its roster. Gbemisola Ikumelo (“Black Ops,” “A League of Their Own”), Alex Edelman (“Just For Us,” “Unfrosted”), Tim Key (“The Witchfinder,” “This Time with Alan Partridge”), and Eric Rahill (“Friendship,” “The Bear”) will all feature in the untitled series. They join previously announced stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Ramona Young.

In addition to their acting roles, Ikumelo, Edelman, and Rahill will also contribute as writers for the show. Specific details about the characters they will portray are still under wraps. Notably, Ikumelo recently earned a BAFTA Award for her performance in “Black Ops,” while Edelman won both an Emmy and a Special Tony Award for his one-man show, “Just For Us.”

Although tied to the world of “The Office,” the series is not a reboot or a spin-off but a fresh mockumentary with an entirely new cast. Rumored to be titled “The Paper” — though no official title has been confirmed — the show will focus on a documentary crew from Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, who stumble upon a historic, struggling Midwestern newspaper. The logline teases that the paper’s publisher, along with a group of volunteer reporters, will be central to the storyline.

Greg Daniels, who adapted the U.S. version of “The Office” for television, is co-creating the new series alongside Michael Koman. Executive producers also include Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, creators of the original British “Office,” as well as Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. Universal Television will serve as the studio for the project.

Daniels began developing the series in January 2024, assembling a writers’ room to craft the next iteration of the mockumentary format that made “The Office” a cultural phenomenon. The original U.S. series, which ran from 2005 to 2013, followed the employees of the Scranton-based paper company Dunder Mifflin. Starring Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling, and B.J. Novak, the show has continued to enjoy widespread popularity through streaming platforms.
