Actor Nick Frost is set to portray Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Production is scheduled to begin this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same studio where the original Harry Potter films were shot.

Frost joins a cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Frost shared insights into his preparation for the role. Drawing from his own experience as a father, he emphasized Hagrid’s protective nature toward Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Frost described visiting the sets, observing early costume and prop work such as the Sorting Hat and wizard wands, and beginning to learn the script crafted by showrunner Francesca Gardiner.

“I’m a dad myself, so I’m naturally protective of the children, which I think is core to Hagrid’s relationship with them,” Frost said. “I can’t wait. I’ve seen the sets, watched the Hagrid beard grow, and started learning Francesca’s script. Working with director Mark Mylod was a big draw for me — the chance to retell this story and play Hagrid is amazing.”

Frost’s portrayal is expected to emphasize Hagrid’s role as a father figure, potentially offering a fresh perspective compared to Robbie Coltrane’s interpretation in the films. While Coltrane’s Hagrid was a fierce protector, Frost plans to lean into the character’s nurturing side, highlighting his unique guardianship of the young trio distinct from Dumbledore’s mentor role.

Previously, Frost played a similar protective character, Gobber the Belch, in How to Train Your Dragon. He sees parallels between Gobber and Hagrid as guardians within their respective fantasy worlds.

With production imminent, the cast is actively preparing, promising fans a new dimension to the beloved magical saga.
