The prestigious Cannes Film Festival, held annually on the French Riviera, welcomed celebrities, directors, producers, and influencers to its 78th edition with a dazzling red carpet event. Known for showcasing the latest cinematic works and high fashion, this year’s festival introduced updated dress code regulations just hours before the opening ceremony.
The new rules explicitly banned nudity, putting an end to the recent trend of “nude-tone” dresses that dominated previous red carpets. Additionally, for logistical reasons related to traffic control, flowing gowns with long trains were prohibited. While some stars, such as Halle Berry, respected the updated dress code—Berry notably opted out of wearing a sculptural Gaurav Gupta gown due to its trailing design and instead chose a more compliant Jacquemus dress—others openly challenged the restrictions.
Supermodel Heidi Klum and Chinese actress Wan Qianhui were among the first to defy the new regulations, wearing high-energy dresses featuring layered trains and voluminous skirts despite the ban. Heidi Klum, for example, wore an elaborate Elie Saab gown inspired by petals, blatantly ignoring the imposed limits.
Other highlights included Bella Hadid, who wore a tight Saint Laurent dress with a playful thigh-high slit that subtly referenced the nudity ban, and Jeremy Strong, who appeared in a muted rose-colored tailcoat paired with matching casual attire and rose gold sunglasses.
These fashion statements have sparked discussions about the evolving dynamics between tradition, regulation, and personal style at one of the world’s most influential film festivals.
