After 17 years, Kellan Lutz and Cam Gigandet are teaming up again, but this time as allies in the crime thriller Desert Dawn. The two actors famously faced off in 2008’s Twilight, where Lutz played Emmet Cullen and Gigandet portrayed the villain, James. Now, they join forces in a gritty new film.
People exclusively premiered the trailer for Desert Dawn on April 23. The trailer opens with intense action scenes, followed by Lutz’s character, newly appointed sheriff Luke Easton, being sworn in. His reception is cold, especially from his deputy, played by Gigandet. The pair’s tense relationship is evident, as Gigandet’s character, John Sites, warns Easton, “You’re gonna get us killed,” as they uncover a dead body and cartel money, suggesting a web of crime and corruption.
Lutz, 40, reflected on the experience of working with Gigandet again. “It was a lot of fun working with Cam after all these years,” he said. “I didn’t have much time to interact with him during Twilight, as I was focused on protecting my family, but he’s a super talented actor. Fans will love seeing us on the same team in Desert Dawn and the banter between us.”
Gigandet, 42, echoed Lutz’s sentiment, recalling how far they’ve come since Twilight. “It feels like a lifetime ago,” he said. “Kellan’s dedication to his career is impressive. He has my respect for maintaining that commitment, and it shows in Desert Dawn.”
The film’s plot centers on Easton and Sites as they investigate the murder of a mysterious woman, which leads them to uncover a dangerous conspiracy involving corrupt businessmen and a cartel. Directed by Marty Murray, Desert Dawn features an ensemble cast, including Chad Michael Collins, Texas Battle, Guillermo Iván, and Niko Foster.
Desert Dawn will hit select theaters and digital platforms on May 16.
