by Barbara

Following the success of the 2020 Shudder Original film Anything for Jackson, director Justin Dyck is set to return to the horror genre with his upcoming film William.

Dyck will adapt the film from the novel of the same name by author Andrew Pyper, which was recently published in September by Putnam and has been optioned by Aperture Entertainment. Co-writing the screenplay alongside Dyck is Chris Sivertson, known for his work on Monstrous.

William is described as a contained sci-fi horror film that combines elements of Ex Machina and The Amityville Horror. The story unfolds within a modern haunted house narrative where artificial intelligence serves as the haunting element.

The novel’s synopsis reveals a gripping tale centered on Henry, a brilliant engineer who creates an artificially intelligent consciousness named William after countless hours spent in his home lab. Isolated by his agoraphobia and preoccupied with his invention, Henry remains distant from his pregnant wife, Lily.

When Lily’s coworkers visit, eager to meet Henry and explore their state-of-the-art smart home, Henry decides to introduce them to William. What begins as an unusual demonstration quickly spirals into chaos as they discover that the security features designed to protect them from external threats are far more effective at trapping dangers within the house.

In addition to William, Justin Dyck is also in pre-production for another horror project titled The Casket Girls.
