Marvel’s “Agatha All Along”: A Spellbinding Follow-Up to “WandaVision”

by Barbara

In the new Marvel series Agatha All Along, Kathryn Hahn’s titular character confidently asserts, “I’m exceptional,” while conversing with her companion, Teen, dismissing concerns about the notorious Witches’ Road. This statement not only reflects Agatha’s campy self-assurance but also serves as a nod to the show’s overall tone.

The latest installment on Disney Plus, a continuation of the acclaimed WandaVision, blends darkness with an infectious energy as Agatha embarks on a perilous quest to reclaim her powers. Much like Dorothy’s journey in The Wizard of Oz, Agatha gathers a coven of allies to traverse the mythical Witches’ Road, which subjects its travelers to increasingly challenging trials. The writers, led by showrunner Jac Schaeffer, intentionally draw parallels to the classic tale, with Agatha humorously referring to Teen as “Toto” and the Road resembling the one that leads Dorothy away from Munchkinland.

As they navigate this treacherous path, Agatha’s eclectic team—comprising Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata), Lilia (Patti LuPone), and Alice (Ali Ahn)—hope to uncover missing elements from their lives, whether it be power, freedom from binding spells, or answers to unresolved family mysteries.

A Melodic Adventure

To invoke the Witches’ Road, the group, joined by Agatha’s oblivious neighbor Sharon (Debra Jo Rupp), performs a song that has sparked debate about whether the series qualifies as a musical. While it features an impressive score by Christophe Beck and Michael Paraskevas, along with two standout numbers by WandaVision creators Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the series does not fully embrace the musical genre. One song, reminiscent of Frozen, showcases the cast’s harmony, while another is a rock ballad that allows Hahn to channel her inner Stevie Nicks.

Lines like “Burn and brew with coven true, and glory shall be thine” encapsulate the show’s vibrant energy, highlighted by the chemistry among the ensemble cast. Joe Locke’s Teen and Ahn’s Alice provide emotional depth, contrasting with the group’s more rugged personas. Each character is well-defined and given ample screen time to confront their past traumas during the Road’s imaginative challenges.

Embracing Episodic Structure

Building on WandaVision’s success, Agatha All Along adopts an episodic format reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, allowing each episode to explore distinct tones and aesthetics. The practical sets and lavish costumes elevate the viewing experience—one moment the characters enjoy endless wine in stylish blazers, and the next, they rock out in a ‘70s recording studio.

Hahn’s performance is particularly noteworthy, as she fully embodies Agatha’s character, oscillating between humor and drama. Initially, Agatha still believes she is ‘Agnes,’ humorously taking on the role of a small-town detective. This clever nod to crime drama conventions serves as a bridge from WandaVision to its darker, more occult themes, making it resilient to critiques regarding pacing or dialogue, as these elements are clearly intended as satire.

Hahn’s physical comedy shines throughout, with her facial expressions and mannerisms drawing comparisons to legends like Jim Carrey and Lucille Ball. This series solidifies her status as one of Marvel’s best casting decisions.

Unfolding Mysteries

While the first four episodes primarily focus on lighthearted adventures, the trailer hints at deeper emotional arcs to come, including Agatha’s complicated history involving her son Nicholas Scratch and the betrayal by her Salem sisters. The upcoming episodes are anticipated to delve into her tumultuous relationship with the enigmatic Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), promising a blend of humor, mystery, and romance.

Agatha All Along successfully builds on the legacy of WandaVision, combining humor, intrigue, and elements of friendship and witchcraft. With its unique approach to storytelling, the series offers a refreshing take that stands out among recent MCU offerings, making it an ideal lead-in to the Halloween season.
