‘Thug Life’ Premieres Amid Controversy, Box Office Buzz

by Barbara

The long-awaited collaboration between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan is finally here. After 38 years since their iconic film Nayakan, the duo reunites to present Thug Life (Vaalivu Ulagam), which premiered globally on June 5, 2025. The film stars Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan (Simbu), Trisha Krishnan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, and Nasser, with limited early screenings already held in the United States and Dubai.

Thug Life is a gripping gangster drama, highly anticipated in the Tamil film industry. However, the release has been overshadowed by controversy following Kamal Haasan’s remarks at the film’s audio launch, where he claimed Kannada language originated from Tamil. This statement sparked protests from the Kannada-speaking community and criticism from the Karnataka High Court, resulting in the film’s ban in Karnataka.

Despite potentially losing an estimated ₹100-150 million in revenue, Haasan remains firm in his refusal to apologize for his comments and stands by his position.

Nevertheless, the film continues to generate excitement, driven by the reunion of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, a star-studded cast, and a musical score by the legendary A.R. Rahman. Pre-sale tickets have already reached ₹138.9 million, with industry experts predicting a strong box office performance that could break global records.
