HBO has released the first teaser trailer for Mountainhead, the highly anticipated feature film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. This marks Armstrong’s directorial debut and follows a group of billionaire friends who meet at an alpine retreat during a global crisis.
The teaser introduces the ensemble cast, featuring Steve Carell, Cory Michael Smith, Ramy Youssef, and Jason Schwartzman. The group of billionaires, attending a summit in a sterile mountain house, engage in playful banter and group activities. But their interactions soon give way to escalating tensions, mirroring the internal power struggles seen in Succession.
In one exchange, Smith’s character sarcastically asks Youssef’s, “Have you seen what your net worth is doing?” Youssef’s character shoots back, “Your platform is racist and shitty.” The playful vibe quickly turns serious when social unrest erupts across the globe, leading to a tense phone call from the US president.
Mountainhead, set to air on May 31st, will also be available for streaming on Max. The film features additional appearances from Moxie’s Hadley Robinson and comedian Andy Daly.
Armstrong, who previously wrote films like In the Loop and Downhill, directed the movie from his own script. The production, which began in March in Park City, Utah, wrapped earlier this month.
This project comes two years after Armstrong wrapped Succession, a show that became a defining cultural force during the Trump era. Over its four-season run, Succession garnered 75 Emmy nominations, including three wins for best drama series. The series also launched several actors, including Kieran Culkin, who won an Oscar for A Real Pain this year.
As the Succession legacy continues to impact Hollywood, Mountainhead promises to bring a similarly sharp look at the world of power and privilege.
