Netflix’s romantic drama Forever has captivated millions of viewers by revisiting the highs and lows of teenage first love. Adapted by Mara Brock Akil from Judy Blume’s classic novel, the series tells the story of Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha (Lovie Simone), two Black high school students growing up in Los Angeles in 2018. Set fifty years after the original novel, Forever offers a fresh and heartfelt take on a timeless coming-of-age romance.
The eight-episode first season wraps up with a bittersweet yet fitting conclusion for the couple. As creator Brock Akil explained to Marie Claire, “Parting ways allows them to grow individually, to develop their identities without losing themselves.” Although Justin and Keisha do not end up together in high school, their story is far from over. Fans eager for more can look forward to Forever returning for a second season.
Season Two Renewal and Release Date
Netflix officially announced that Forever will return for its second season on May 14, 2025, less than a week after the first season premiered on the streaming platform.
“This show is about more than just first love—it’s about being seen, about capturing the tenderness, complexity, and truth of adolescence,” Mara Brock Akil said in the announcement. “Season two is our love letter to those who said, ‘Yes, this is for me.’ We are honored, excited, and ready to dive deeper. Thank you, Netflix—season two is coming!”
The rapid renewal took some by surprise, but both Brock Akil and lead actress Lovie Simone hinted at Forever’s future during press events. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Akil noted, “There’s definitely room for more. This art form isn’t just for me, it’s for the audience. I believe viewers want character-driven, complex love stories. If they want more, so do I. Let’s get started.”
Simone told Variety that the breakup between Keisha and Justin in the season finale represents just “the closing of one chapter” in their story. In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Times, she added, “An ending can also be a beginning. I do see Keisha and Justin reconnecting at some point. I don’t know when or why. They need to find themselves first. It’s important to show that you can grow individually without relying on the other person.”
What to Expect from Season Two
Details on the production start date remain unknown, but given that the first season was filmed from April to July 2024 and premiered the following May, season two could arrive sometime in late 2026.
Most of the main cast are expected to return, including Michael Cooper Jr. as Justin Edwards, Lovie Simone as Keisha Clark, Xosha Roquemore as Shelly Clark, Karen Pittman as Dawn Edwards, Wood Harris as Eric Edwards, Marvin Lawrence Winans III as Jaden Edwards, Barry Shabaka Henley as George, Niles Fitch as Darius, and Ali Gallo as Chloe.
Regarding the storyline, Mara Brock Akil revealed in an interview with Tudum that she is exploring how Justin and Keisha’s lives unfold after their breakup. She asked, “What happens to them after the first semester? Honestly, Howard University is Keisha’s first love. I want to see who she becomes there. For Justin, now that he has direction, what will he do during his gap year? He needs to figure out who he is apart from Keisha. How do you start over? How do you reopen a door you know is open?”
Brock Akil also emphasized to Entertainment Weekly her desire to maintain the love between Justin and Keisha without letting it become “destructive.” She said, “I love this ending and its complexity because the love is still whole. They broke up to embrace their truest selves individually, but it was out of love. If they cross paths again, it will still be love. I look forward to young people showing us how to walk away from relationships without destroying them. We don’t need more heartbreak.”
Forever continues to be a poignant exploration of young love, identity, and growth, promising more emotionally rich storytelling in its upcoming season.
